Haskell Park Apartments
Forty-nine stockholders, most of them Rockford people, formed the Haskell Park Building Corporation in 1922 to put up a hotel-apartment across from Haskell Park. Wybe J. Vander Meer was the architect; the first tenants moved in the following year.
It opened as something closer to a hotel than an apartment house. Five stories of stone, brick, steel and concrete, with shops on the ground floor — a pharmacy, a beauty parlor, a milliner. A resident manager kept a desk in the tiled lobby; maid service could be had by the hour, and milk was delivered direct to the service closet off each kitchenette.
The building and the park both carry the name of Dr. George Haskell, who came up the Rock River by steamboat in 1838 and gave the city the ground.
Urban Equity Properties bought the building in 2019 and renovated its 35 studio apartments and ground-floor commercial spaces.
