G.J. Lofts occupies the original State Farm headquarters, built in 1929 — seven years after George Mecherle founded the company to sell honest auto insurance to Illinois farmers. The Art Deco tower grew in stages — 1934, 1939, 1945 — until it reached 162 feet, the tallest building in downtown Bloomington.
State Farm moved its headquarters out in 1974 and its last division in 2018, and in 2019 announced the building would be torn down. Instead, Urban Equity Properties purchased it — and the conversion is now underway.
The tower reopens as G.J. Lofts — named for Mecherle's initials — with 183 apartments, a ground-floor food hall, and a restaurant in the original boardroom.
